Read the signs correctly
Use a positive amount for someone who should receive money and a negative amount for someone who should pay. The set of balances must total zero because every amount owed by one person is owed to someone else.

A practical plan, not a mathematical claim
The calculator repeatedly matches the largest remaining payer with the largest remaining recipient. This is easy to inspect and produces a valid plan, but it is not presented as a proof of the globally minimum number of payments.

Why must my balances add to zero?
A settlement plan is only possible when the total amount people should receive equals the total amount people should pay.
Does this calculator send payments?
